How Do Invisible Aligners Work?

Gone are the days when the only choice for teeth straightening was metal ‘train track’ braces! Now, as well as fixed braces, you can have an easier option: Invisalign ‘invisible’ aligners. These clever adult braces have taken the dental world by storm, owing to their everyday convenience, their clear design and their exceptional results. Read on to find out more about these adult braces, which we offer to patients right here in our Clapham dental practice.

Invisible aligners in a nutshell

One of the main benefits of invisible aligners is their clear design. Why? Because it makes for subtle, discreet treatment. So even the most self-conscious teen or worried adult no longer has to feel exposed when undergoing orthodontics. Our patients love how easy Invisalign is to wear, clean and remove, and also cite them as being extremely comfortable with their smiles.

Treatment, step-by-step

Clear brace treatment really couldn’t be easier. After a consultation – which determines whether Invisalign is suitable for your smile – you’ll then have some 3D images produced of your smile, which show how your teeth move throughout your treatment and give a picture of your results. The whole process is extremely predictable, though some people do have tweaks – called refinements – at the end of the process. A retainer can then be worn to keep your teeth in their new position. Invisalign also has an app that can help you keep on top of when to swap out your next set of aligners. This is because they need to be changed every few weeks to keep slowly moving your teeth.

Treatment eligibility

With Invisalign clear braces, most adults and teens are suitable – though there are a few things to bear in mind:

  • The braces may not be recommended for those with extensive dental work (e.g. a bridge)
  • If other kinds of dental work (fillings, extractions etc.) are required, your dentist will discuss these with you
  • If you have gingivitis or periodontitis, treatment may not be recommended

Benefits of Invisalign in Clapham

If you’re still on the fence about Invisalign clear braces, then consider how they could help your smile:
Straighter teeth – their biggest draw is making your smile straighter and more uniform, correcting gaps, crowding and other problems
Healthier mouth – by solving spacing issues, Invisalign could make your smile easier to care for, leading to enhanced oral health
