Bruxism can be due to emotions running high. If you find you grind your teeth when you’re feeling angry, stressed, anxious, frustrated, in pain, or even just in a hurry, or under pressure, then it’s possible, you’re also doing at night, when you’re not aware of it. It can also be due to our teeth being slightly out of line, even if it’s not visibly noticeable.
If your Bruxism is left untreated, then your teeth may begin to wear down, causing serious tooth damage that may be costly and painful to fix. In extreme cases, you may even break your teeth. It also causes sleep disturbance, which brings with it its own problems. Lack of sleep can cause high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attacks, depression, lower immunity and even contribute to obesity.
The duration of the treatment for Bruxism depends on your stress levels, which depend on what’s happening in your life and your frame of mind. You may need to wear a bite guard to protect the teeth from damage. There are different types of bite guard which can be discussed with your practitioner. The mouth guard stops you from damaging your teeth, because the wear and pressure will be on the guard, and not your teeth. If your nightly tooth grinding continues you’ll need to replace your mouth guard every few years.
It may take a few weeks to get used to wearing your mouth guard at night, but it will be custom made to fit your mouth and be as comfortable as possible from the first day of wearing it.
