Orthodontics guide: What food and drink you should consume with an Invisalign brace
Seeing people with fitted braces either wincing when they bite into something crunchy, or smiling with the remnants of their last meal still stuck in their teeth, is not a good advert for wearing braces. Have you ever witnessed this? Did it put you off enquiring about wearing braces, even though you’d love to have straighter teeth and a winning smile? Read today’s blog from our Clapham orthodontists about Invisalign braces to understand what all the hype is about!
It can take as little as just 6 weeks to straighten your teeth and give you the perfect smile you’ve always craved, but if those 6 weeks are going to involve your friends and family watching your metal mouth whilst you eat in a weird way, you might decide that the benefits of orthodontic treatment simply aren’t worth the hassle. Dental technology has changed a lot in recent years and so has the design of orthodontic braces. Take a look at the difference Invisalign can make to your straightening experience.
Foods to avoid with traditional braces
Crunchy food like nuts, carrots and hard, chewy pizza crusts are very difficult to eat whilst wearing traditional braces, as is chewy food like tough meats. Biting down hard on ice can dislodge your braces altogether, causing painful, costly damage.
Sticky foods like sweets are also likely to pull the braces off your teeth and if they don’t, they will get stuck between the wires. Sticky foods may also be hard to brush off the tooth surfaces with regular cleaning. Leaving your teeth exposed to sugar can often lead to tooth decay. Wearers of traditional braces report that they only had to have one bad experience with food to put them off eating something that’s not soft or easy to bite into. None of this applies to Invisalign braces. With Invisalign braces, you can eat whatever you like. No fuss, no mess.
With Invisalign braces, you can eat anything.
The Invisalign teeth straightening system involves you wearing a series of clear, hard plastic trays over your teeth. This is to gently guide them into a more desirable position. Invisible aligners in Clapham are discreet and they don’t attract food as the aligners are completely removable. Once the wearer is done consuming their food and drink they can then cleaned their teeth afterwards. Once they’ve brushed their teeth they can then easily pop the clear aligners back in to continue their straightening process.
We recommend that you wear the aligners for a minimum of 20 hours a day, but as long as you follow the compliance guidelines, you’ll be able to eat whatever you like, in complete comfort, as well as be able to brush your teeth normally afterwards. No need to struggle trying to floss between the wires and get around the brackets like you would with traditional braces.
When you’re given your new tray every couple of weeks, you might experience slight discomfort. If this happens, you might want to stick to softer foods. On the whole, however, you’ll be able to eat and drink whatever you wish and whenever you like when you opt for Invisalign in Clapham.
